The H1.12 architecture podcast recently aired a conversation I recorded in February 2025 with Mara Kirchhoff, Lisa Felicitas Köhler, and Miriam Weckerle about the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on architectural practice. We discussed how AI is changing professional workflows and what architecture students can expect in their future careers.
Developments Since the Recording
The months between recording and release have seen remarkable developments in AI technology, validating many of the predictions we discussed. Several key advances have emerged:
Enhanced Control in Image Generation: AI models now offer significantly more control over visual outputs than was available in February. New context models like ChatGPT and FLUX Context, along with improvements to established platforms such as Midjourney and LeonardoAI, allow architects to provide much more specific parameters and achieve more predictable results.
Specialized AI Agent Networks: The industry has moved toward employing multiple smaller AI models, each trained for specific tasks, rather than relying on single large models. These specialized systems perform exceptionally well in their respective domains, while a coordinating AI integrates the results into comprehensive solutions. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) represents a particularly significant advancement, enabling AI models to directly interface with architectural planning tools and solve increasingly complex design challenges with enhanced expertise.
Professional Evolution: Since the recording, I have co-founded Holder Bilhöfer Architekten PartGmbB, where we provide consultation services to architectural firms undergoing digital transformation. This development illustrates how AI integration has become essential for modern architectural practice, requiring both technical understanding and strategic implementation.
